Space & Environment Planning

Overview: My approach to space planning begins with the logical ordering of space to meet specific needs. Once I’ve met the basic requirements, I look for ways to incorporate multisensory aspects when possible. I believe site visitors expect immersive experiences.

Different Challenges: Ticonderoga Heritage Museum: Ticonderoga, NY. Create a striking design and interpretive plan that could be built on a limited budge and installed by volunteers. The challenge was to tell the stories of industrial growth, decline and reinvention in the limited space of the former 1888 Office of Ticonderoga Pulp & Paper Company.

Erie Canal Heritage Room: Rochester, NY. Design “Heritage Rooms” to highlight existing buildings that were on the original Erie Canal. Each "room" is created with a change in paving materials, embedded hoof prints and Rochester Heritage Trail medallion as well as a lamppost holding a Heritage Trail banner. Contrasting material was embedded in the sidewalk to indicate a trail along the old towpath.

Fisher-Price Rainforest: East Aurora, NY. As an introduction to a new product line I created an immersive rainforest environment. A blend of real plants, handcrafted tropical leaves and translucent fabrics were set against a fabric rainforest photo mural backdrop. To add to the fun, bird and animal sounds played in the background, punctuated by a lion roar triggered when visitors entered the space. I built large fake stones and tree stumps as product pedestals.
